With around 200 stores, Wickes concentrate on providing products for home improvements. They are focused on the Do It Yourself (DIY) market, as well as tradesmen.
In recent years, they appear to have been a real hit with consumers. In the last 4 years, for instance, they've been voted "Britain's Favourite DIY Store" on 3 separate occasions. Their main competition comes from the likes of B&Q and Homebase.
Your feelings on all of these stores may well depend upon whether or not your enjoy DIY. A visit is likely to be fun, or maybe a chore! Either way, what can the online store to help?
The home page practically screams "Offers!", with savings available on many larger products, such as kitchen suites, bathroom packages and designer radiators. We're more interested in looking at things a bit more deeply though - how about if you just want a few home improvement essentials, rather than a complete refit of an existing room?
We reckon that decorating is a more realistic task for many DIY enthusiasts, so we took a closer look at that section of the site. One thing that immediately impressed us was the simple guides. For example, there was a PDF file available on how to do coving. We thought that was an excellent idea and noticed that there are also videos for you to follow. Our only slight disappointment concerned the fact that there aren't more of them.
It seems to us that providing tips for customers is definitely a good thing. We're not all confident in our DIY skills, so it helps to have some clear, concise information on what a task involves. It also informs the buying decision. By pointing out what tools or materials are required at the outset, it can leave us feeling happy that we have covered all bases.
Looking at the paints, we were slightly confused. Many of us agreed that we had previously stuck with big brand names, such as Dulux. Looking at the Wickes site, however, it appeared that the online store is dominated by own-brand choices.
Those who have previously used own-brand DIY store paints before noted that they are often of high quality. In fact, many of us may be missing a trick by paying more for more expensive alternatives. This might, however, be one instance where it might make more sense to visit the physical store if you want access to a broader choice.
We felt more confident when looking specifically at paint brushes. This confidence was certainly helped by the presence of reviews from previous customers. We applaud retailers who make use of these, particularly when they are honest, detailed insights into particular products.
A quick word about delivery. Looking at their range of products, it's clear that there are some big differences in terms of sizing. An entire kitchen suite, for example, is harder to deliver than a tin of paint. This is reflected in the delivery pricing.
Standard products are offered with next-day delivery. If you spend up to £45 then the delivery charge is £5.95. If you spend more than £45 then the delivery is free of charge.
Bulky items cost £22 to deliver, but that fee is waived when you spend more than £300.
