Top Ten American Holidays

American HolidaysOur recent survey asked Brits to name their favourite places in the United States for spending time. The results were, in some cases, a little suprising. We know that many people like to fly over to the US for their holidays, but some of the locations in America that aren't visited so frequently appear to score highly with British holiday-makers.

So here are the results...in reverse order:

10. Mammoth Mountain, California: Ever heard of it? We hadn't, so we were pretty stunned by how many people wrote to us to tell us about this place. It's apparently a great location in which to go snowboarding, which explains it's popularity.

9. Washington DC: The capital city scores highly but maybe not as highly as would be expected.

8. Niagara Falls: Would be a great surprise if they didn't make the list. It's clear that plenty of people make the trip to the Falls, even if they're staying elsewhere.

7. The Grand Canyon: An iconic sight to be seen. Many people responding to our survey suggested that it's best seen by taking a helicopter flight - something to try if you've not done so!

6. Los Angeles: Some might be surprised that LA doesn't score more highly. Here in the UK we've become increasingly interested in the celebrity lifestyle and we may well associate this city with it more than any other.

5. New Orleans: Despite, or perhaps because of, the destruction caused by the hurricane, it seems that many Brits are wanting to make the most of this great city.

4. Yellowstone National Park: It appears that trips to America are about the scenery and the spectacular, just as they're about other attractions.

3. Las Vegas: Suprisingly high in the list given visitor numbers. A number of people mentioned Las Vegas as a real hub of poker and it seems that online growth in the game is spurring demand for visits to the city.

2. Orlando: Theme parks, villas, pools and family fun. The most popular destination for people with families.

1. New York: The Big Apple is extremely popular with British tourists and it's clear that many have been returning in recent years. There are plenty of attractions that score highly but the biggest factor that attracts us to New York is...the great shopping!

The United States is, of course, a massive country. That means that there were almost bound to be some surprises in this list. Some locations didn't score anywhere near as well as expected, including the likes of Chicago and Miami. Others were much more highly rated than we might have anticipated. The inclusion of a number of locations that are better known for their stunning scenery suggests that tourists are just as interested in seeing the Great American Outdoors as they are in eating, drinking and shopping.
