What our reviewers say

Ordering groceries online from Tesco is something that's familiar to many of us. In fact, it may be a little too familiar! For those of us who don't particularly like the experience of grocery shopping, the ability to shop online and avoid the checkouts, stray trolleys and annoyances has certainly been welcomed.

The funny thing about buying your food (and other essentials online) is that you become rather programmed. You learn how the online shopping works and then you get into a little routine. It doesn't take too long for that to happen either - after your first few shops, it seems surprisingly natural.

So what is there to say about the online shopping experience here?

Basically, you decide on a delivery slot, with each slot having a particular charge (this differs from some other supermarkets). You tend to pay less if you're willing to accept deliveries at less popular times of the week (and day). They also send you a text message on the day, giving you a more exact indication of when your shopping will arrive.

If they miss the delivery slot (which we've found that they do sometimes), then you don't end up out of pocket - we've had delivery fees refunded. Some of our review staff say that they've also received vouchers in these circumstances, although some of us reckon that they may be getting mixed up with another popular supermarket!

Anyway, you can then start shopping. There are various approaches that you can use here, which include visiting various virtual aisles, searching for particular product types or brand names, writing out an entire shopping list, or looking back at what you've ordered previously.

You can also make use of options to narrow down the product choices - you might focus, for instance, solely on special offers. Alternatively, you might only consider products that you've previously purchased.

Does the system work well? In general, we think so. There are a few issues (sometimes you get a bit more, or a bit less, fresh produce than you expected - some of the substitutions lack a little logic), but it's generally hard to find fault.

If you find it annoying, or difficult, to visit the store then the online option is a good one.

A note too to say that this huge retailer sells so much more online. Much of it, however, won't be delivered at the same time as your groceries.

For Tesco Direct items, it works a little more like any other online store. Delivery prices depend on the size of item (and how quickly you want the product) and the website (strangely, we thought) compares delivery prices with those offered by Argos. That probably gives you a good idea of who Tesco Direct are competing against.

Are there alternatives?

Tesco are one of the UK's leading retailers, specialising in food.

Competition includes Marks and Spencer.
