Taking A New Look At Your Home

When we live in a house we can sometimes become immune to its shortcomings. Alternatively, we may actually find that we tend to magnify the importance of them. Taking an objective view and keeping things in perspective is often easier said than done. When was the last time that you tried to look at your own property through the eyes of an outsider.

It's an action that very few of us find the time to take. That's not surprising - after all, many of us lead busy lives and don't have much time for such thoughts. But it is something that's worth doing, so here's a little exercise for you:

Walk out of your front door (take your keys with you!) and walk away from your property. Once you're off your own land, close your eyes and then turn around to look at your home. Take the time to have a proper look at the exterior of the property. What's the main impact of what you see? Are there any problems that you hadn't previously spotted? Are there some things that just don't look right?

After you've finished looking at the outside, unlock the front door and step inside.

It's now time for you to tour your own home. Walk into every room in turn, including the hallway and look carefully at everything you see, but think about your first impressions too. As you wander round your home, you'll hopefully feel proud of many of the home improvements that you've made. Maybe those lamp shades that you fitted really add the finishing piece to a room, or maybe you're happy that those Bargain Doors look great and you know that they cost you so much less than you were expecting.

After you've visited every room, pick up a pen and paper. Now tour the home again in exactly the same way, but this time make a note of all of the jobs that you identify as you walk around. This is an absolutely brilliant way to build up a list of DIY tasks.

Once you've finished, you may find that the list looks too big - it's simply overwhelming. Don't worry - now's the time to sit down, maybe with a drink and a biscuit, and to look at the list. Involve the whole family in the process. You're aim is to prioritise the jobs that you've identified. You might want to do this by concentrating on one room at a time. Alternatively, many people find it useful to concentrate on so-called 'quick wins' - that means small jobs that can be done quickly and easily, but that will have a surprisingly large impact.

At the end of this exercise you'll probably feel refreshed and you should have a clear direction for future home improvements. Well done! You really have taken a new look at the place where you live!
