A big name in the world of online retailing when it comes to video games, music and rather a lot more.
We must admit to being slightly surprised (confused even) on our latest visit to this online store. The home page featured the usual, expected selection of music choices, films and video games.
Delving deeper, however, we noticed that things have changed here. Would you, for example, associate Play with football kits, bikes, running shoes and clothing? We certainly didn't.
So what do we make of this new look? The first thing to say when we see a retailer diversifying in this way is that it's not necessarily a bad thing. Some stores are pretty good at supplying a wide range of items (we have few complaints about John Lewis, for example).
Things tend to become a bit more difficult when the retailer in question has already built up a reputation that's associated with certain niche products. To many, this is an online store that should be competing directly with the likes of HMV. So are they still doing so?
They still stock an extensive collection of movies, video games and music. Our rather unscientific analysis of their pricing suggested that they are cheaper than HMV (as an example) on some products, but more expensive on others. There didn't seem to be any particular pattern on this - you really do have to carry out price comparisons in order to check.
What about their approach to delivering items?
There was a big banner on their home page suggesting that they now have a range of new delivery options. These would allow you to "get what you want even faster". We were understandably intrigued. What could it all be about?
Basically, they offer free UK delivery as standard on absolutely everything. That's simple and we like it. There's not much room for confusion there.
That free delivery usually takes between 3 and 5 working days. If you don't like waiting, then you can pay to receive your purchases sooner. There is then a range of prices that come into play, depending on what you order.
So you can still get free delivery, unless you're really desperate to get your hands on a product. It's still pretty clear and we're still fans of this general approach.
If the price is right, we would still buy from this retailer.
Now, what about the new areas that they seem to have strayed into? Would we buy other products from them? That free delivery offer certainly makes things enticing and we would consider them, unless we really needed specialist advice, in which case we might still look to a niche retailer. Again, much of it would come down to price.
