Home Improvements: Finishing Touches

I can remember decorating the downstairs of my house over a period of some weeks. I felt really pleased with myself as I painted the living room walls, wallpapered the hallway and added plenty of neat touches. After I'd finished, I stood back to really admire my handy work. Do you know what I thought when I did so?

I thought: it doesn't quite look right.

You may well have had exactly the same thought after getting to the point where you thought that you'd completed some home improvements. Something more is required, but you can't quite work out what. So what do you do? In my case, I asked a trusted friend to come over and take a look. I'd known them for years and I knew that they'd be honest.

They liked what I'd done but agreed that something wasn't quite as it should be. Then they spotted what it was and as soon as they told me it seemed so obvious: it was the doors.

I'd spent so much time concentrating on the 'major' aspects of the work that I hadn't even thought about the internal doors. But I could now see that they simply didn't go very well with my funky new interiors. I had a choice to make - I could either try and work with the existing doors, or I could replace them.

In my case, I opted to replace them. The existing ones were cheap and rather nasty. It would have been almost impossible to make much of those old, poor quality doors. The problem with replacing doors is, of course, that it can seem like a big and expensive job. Fortunately, it doesn't need to be.

There are quite a few online doors retailers (Bargain Doors are a good example), meaning that you can check out a large range of doors and see how they might look in your own home. Replacing existing doors is relatively easy, although you'll certainly need a little help - fixing a door is not so easy if there's just the one of you.

Do you need new interior doors? Not necessarily, but this is a good example of how finishing touches can make a massive difference. My house now looks great (as my friend agrees!) and I'm glad that I did that bit extra to finish the project. If I hadn't done so then I'd always have felt that things weren't as they should be and I'd always have looked at the job with a little regret.
