European Hidden Holiday Gems
So you want to go somewhere in Europe but you're looking for somewhere a bit different? Luckily, finding such places isn't as difficult as you might think. There are a number of locations that offer great holiday experiences but may not be so well known, particularly since it's now so easy to travel in Eastern Europe.
Split, Croatia
Croatia is more accessible than you might imagine and direct flights will take you to the beautiful city of Split. As you approach on the main road, you may wonder what all the fuss is about. It initially looks like an industrial city - it is, in part. But the secret to this hidden gem is to be found in the city centre, where numerous apartments are built into the walls of a Roman palace.
Nearby beaches allow you to spend time relaxing, while a day trip to the nearby island of Hvar should also be on the agenda.
Krakow, Poland
For some reason many people think of Poland as being cold, grey and bleak. The city of Krakow is a stunning place, particularly when temperatures rise during the summer months. With the largest medieval town square in Europe, Krakow is a great place to spend time and is easily accessible from the UK with travel companies like Alpha Rooms offering some very competitive deals.
Cologne, Germany
How can this possibly be a hidden gem, considering that it's located in Germany? The answer is that few people seem to visit this delightful city. When most people think of Germany they decide to head for Munich or Berlin. While both of those cities are certainly interesting, Germany's oldest city is well worth a visit.
Belgrade, Serbia
This may be a place that you associate with the Civil War in Yugoslavia. Although there's no escaping from that conflict, Belgrade is a city that offers great nightlife, funky bars and a fun atmosphere. It's ideal for a weekend city break.
Zurich, Switzerland
Why do so many people not consider Zurich as a holiday destination? We think that one reason may be because it's often thought of as being rather starchy. That's a shame because it's actually a great place to spend time. It's not cheap, but it is worth it.
Tallinn, Estonia
Head for the old town in Tallinn and you'll see why so many people love being here. Many Scots loved it so much that they came here to watch a football match and ended up settling down. But that's another story!
Helsinki, Finland
People flock to Copenhagen and Oslo, but it seems that Helsinki gets far less attention. Maybe it's because it seems that much further away. That certainly makes it slightly more difficult to visit for a long weekend but Finland is a beautiful country and Helsinki makes the ideal base for exploring.
