Have you heard of Dorothy Perkins? There's a pretty good chance that you have, with this brand boasting nearly 600 UK stores.
If you're looking for ladies clothing and accessories online, then this is likely to be one of your main destinations.
We were interested to see that they don't seem to have branched out. Unlike some retailers, they don't appear to have made an attempt to build on their popularity by offering a considerably wider range of products. That appears to be a strategic decision and actually makes some sense.
The website doesn't feel too cluttered as a result. There's a strong impression that this is a store that's designed for women. This is where you'll find dresses, party outfits, boots, shoes and accessories. It's not somewhere that you'll find flatscreen television sets, for example.
This may seem like a strange distinction to make, but we've certainly noticed that an increasing number of stores now attempt to cover all bases. It's no bad thing that this is one retailer that's decided to stick to their fundamentals.
But how are they doing on those fundamentals? Pretty well, we reckon. Looking at the dresses category of the store alone, we found that there were more than 1,700 separate items listed. That's a truly astonishing range. You can narrow your search down by style, price, colour and a range of other factors.
We were able, for instance, to identify that there are 377 black dresses available online. The numbers are impressive, but how about pricing? Are they likely to appeal to many consumers?
We found black dresses priced between £8 and £60, with a considerable mixture of styles. They are obviously aiming to produce affordable fashions. Would these be suitable for high society? We think that you might be able to pull that off, but it's evidently not the target market for the store. These are high street prices, aimed at a broad cross-section of buyers.
Let's address that issue of deliveries too. The main headings on the website suggest that free delivery is available and that you can by 6pm for next day delivery. Both suggestions are appealing. By nature, we're always suspicious, so we decided to take a closer look!...
That free delivery is available when you spend £75 or more online, so it's not applicable to all orders. Standard UK mainland delivery is £4, with waiting times estimated at 2-4 working days. You can pay more for next day delivery (£5 for delivery on a weekday and £7.50 for delivery on a weekend).
So maybe not quite as good as the headlines suggested, but still fairly simple to follow.
