Our reviewers thoughts
As one of the real powerhouses of the computing industry, it's clear that Dell have a strong position. Plenty of people buy their products and they're a first choice for many business buyers. But should you simply "go with the flow"?
The fact that many others purchase their products isn't necessarily an indication of quality. Having said this, it's clear to us that many customers return again and again. That's a good sign. With a relatively limited number of outlets selling Dell products in the UK, making use of the official site seems to be the obvious thing to do.
So what are you going to find when you get there?
We like the clarity that's on offer. You're immediately given the choice to jump to one of four sections on the site, depending upon your requirements. These are:
For Home
For Small and Medium Business
For Public Sector
For Large Enterprise
That's a nice, neat breakdown - it also rather backs up the thought that many businesses choose to buy these products.
So what happens when you look more deeply at those products? We decided to take a look at the range that's available for home users. We found that the product selection was further broken down, allowing you to choose laptops, desktops, XPS & Alienware (which appear to be Dell brand names), printers, mobile devices, electronics and accessories.
Looking at laptops, for instance, you can take a look at those of a particular size, or choose to select by use. We thought this was a good way of doing things - if you're not a technical expert, then you can simply say what you're interested in doing (such as playing computer games, or everyday use) and you're then presented with the laptops that suit your needs.
There are also links to reviews of the various machines. These can be helpful, allowing you to see how previous customers have rated the performance of their purchases (as well as the levels of after-care that they've received).
You can then simply choose to add your chosen purchase to the online shopping cart, or - if you have specific requirements - make options that would meet your particular needs.
For a standard laptop (priced at £329), we were quoted a delivery price of £19.99. Delivery options weren't particularly clear to us prior to actually placing a product in the online shopping basket.
