Credit Crunch Shopping

Are you tired of hearing about the credit crunch? Not so long ago it seemed that this entire concept was a complete mystery to most of us. How times change!

Now it seems that there are financial experts appearing left, right and centre to tell us about the latest implications of the global financial strife. In this world of banks, high finance and recession talk, it can sometimes seem as though the issues for many real people are being ignored.

Yes, it's undoubtedly the case that there are big problems facing many individuals and institutions at this time. But what does that mean for all of us.

Here at Offer UK we're not experts on the world of corporate finance. Far from it. What we do know, however, is that many consumers still want to make purchases and want to know the best ways of doing so cheaply.

In this article we take a look at how you can approach shopping during the credit crunch.

Are there bargains to be found?

With retailers increasingly engaged in a desperate scramble to win customers, it seems that we've seen an enormous number of new sales in recent months. We've had many visitors to our site asking whether such sales really offer the value for money that they sometimes seem to. In short, the question that's often being asked is whether this is all too good to be true.

When it comes to sales, one thing that's worth thinking about is that low prices are only really good value to you if you actually want to purchase the product or service that has been reduced in price. If you buy something simply because it's "on sale" then you may well find yourself with an item that you'll never make use of.

A far better approach to shopping is to consider what you want to buy and to do a little research to find out what a reasonable price might be. This approach can sound a little bit heavy, but the reality is really that you need to compare prices offered by various retailers. If you're prepared to do that then you should be able to spot whether or not a sale price really is as good as it seems.

When prices are falling there is a tendency for some would-be shoppers to hold off making purchases. This is because there is a thought that even lower prices may be just behind the corner. There may certainly be some validity to this thought process, although some would point to the bigger picture (see note at the bottom of the page for details)

Where should I shop?

Although this website mainly looks at online shopping, it's definitely the case that lower prices can be found both on the internet and in high streets. Some internet retailers will have lower overheads, allowing them to market products at lower prices. Don't forget to take delivery costs into account though - these can change the overall prices that you may end up paying.

Some retailers will use regular sales to entice customers and there may indeed be bargains to be found in these instances. Don't forget that the internet gives you access to price comparison and discount voucher code tools too - these can help you to save more money online.

Price comparison services

A reliable, honest price comparison website can help you to save a considerable amount of money each year. In short, these services allow you to quickly compare prices across a number of online retailers. The theory is that they will allow you to identify the retailers offering the cheapest products.

Does the theory always work? No - some price comparison sites will accept sponsorship money, in return for promoting some retailers above others.

Despite this, such services can be useful. Find a good one and you should be able to make savings.

Discount codes

UK discount codes have started to catch on in a big way. Not every retailer will offer such codes but, when they do, you could make some impressive savings. Where should you begin? Our own discount code service is free to access, unlike many others. You can start with our UK discount code listings to see whether you could get lower prices.

Note: The bigger picture

Mention was made above to "the bigger picture". What exactly was that hinting at?

Although falling prices and stores competing for our custom can seem like a positive for shoppers, there are associated negative factors. If retailers are that desperate for our trade then it's likely that at least some of them will be in some sort of financial difficulty. From a consumer point of view, this can cause concern. After all, do we really want to buy from a store that may not be there in a matter of a few weeks.

Looking at the wider UK economy, there are also some negatives here. Once retailers get into trouble, it will often follow that employees will be made redundant. This clearly leads to some extremely unfortunate personal stories, while having a knock-on effect for many more people. So it's clear that falling prices aren't always quite so good as they may seem.
