Clothing and Electronics Lead the Way
January 2008 saw the greatest value of online sales of any January to date, according to figures released last week.
The Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) say that the clothing and consumer electronics sectors were particularly strong, helping to drive the sales figures up by 75% when compared to those for January 2007.
Internet sales hit £4.5 billion for the month, with health and beauty product sales also up strongly - by 18% compared to the previous January.
The alcoholic drinks sector performed strongly too, with consumers reacting to rising pub prices by looking for cheaper alternatives online.
Analysts suggest that online retailers will perform well in 2008, despite the mixed economic outlook here in the UK.
