About Burgundy Wines
In this section, we take a closer look at Burgundy wines. Wines grown in this region of France have proven to be extremely popular, but what's all the fuss about? We take you through the basics, aiming to help you to find out more about these wines.
Burgundy grapes
Let's begin by talking about the grapes grown here. There are two dominant grape varieties: pinot noir and chardonnay. You may well have heard of both.
A combination of climate and soil means that the perfect growing conditions are in place for these two varieties. Pinot noir prefers well drained soils, for instance, and produces fantastic red wines. Chardonnay, on the other hand, is associated with dry white wines. If a wine comes from this region then you'll usually be able to tell from the label on the bottle, although the type of grape is not always made clear.
There are numerous vineyards within the region, which includes a number of famous wine producing areas. These include Chablis and and the vineyards of Cote de Nuits. Chablis is an area where the Chardonnay grapes are grown extensively, resulting in beautiful white wines.
