Our review
When Asda became part of the giant US retailer, Wal-Mart, many people wondered how things would change. Would things become completely different? Would there be a realistic challenge to the dominance of Tesco.
Although Tesco remains the largest retailer here in the UK (by some distance), there's no doubt that they have been facing more competition from Asda. The latter are competitive on pricing and it's been noticeable that they are providing a more extensive home delivery service these days for those buying their groceries online.
Their clothing ranges have also proved popular (as well as cheap). But what does their online store tell us about what's been going on and what's set to happen in the future?
The home page contains a mass of information, but what are the main elements that strike us?
Well, there's the Asda Price Challenge, that has also been widely advertised on television. It's a bold promise. Basically, they say that if they are not 10% cheaper than Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Waitrose on comparable grocery shopping, then they'll refund the difference. That's an impressive promise.
As you may have seen advertised, they even have a "receipt checker" that will automatically check your latest receipt to see whether the prices would have been cheaper elsewhere. Essentially, it's a guarantee that shopping for groceries at Asda will be 10% cheaper than other competing retailers (based on comparable items).
How do we feel about this? There's no doubt that this must be good news for consumers. We all want to know that we're getting the best possible deals and this sort of initiative is a good one for putting customers at ease. It left our test shoppers feeling like they had certainly made savings.
Although the guarantee doesn't apply to items from Asda Direct, it's a sign that the company intends to be extremely competitive on price. Since they also stock a wide range of items, much like all of the other supermarkets, this is a tantalising prospect.
Aside from the groceries, they sell all sorts of other products. Indeed, they seem to be taking a similar approach to all of the other main supermarkets - branching out into areas that aren't related to their core activities. They are putting themselves in a position to tackle stores dealing with numerous product types.
Many of their brand-name products are competitively priced, but it's their clothing range that may cause the most interest. They've been attempting to use the George range to introduce stylish, everyday clothes at reasonable prices. It's their school uniforms that appear to be particularly good value for money.
If you're looking for low prices, then there's no doubt that this is a retailer that wants to deliver them. In the years ahead, they look set to increase their battle for dominance with Tesco.
