Our review
Wow! Where do you start when talking about Amazon? We might start with a little trip down memory lane. Do you remember the days when they were an emerging force in the world of book retailing? There they were, entering the UK with their new concept.
Would we all be happy to buy books online? The answer was a definite "yes" and their business was to grow as more and more of us became accustomed to shopping online. In fact, it's probably fair to say that many of us will have made our very first purchases online.
Did other retailers see the emerging storm? There's a feeling that traditional UK book stores were caught somewhat by surprise. In many senses, they've found it hard to recover. The likes of Waterstones may well wish that they had reacted more quickly. Now, it's Amazon who are in prime position.
Except things have changed considerably. It's not just book shops who are looking at losing sales. Amazon moved quickly into the world of music and video games. Today, you can buy just about anything you want from this online giant. They even allow other retailers to advertise products on their site.
This means that, as you may have gathered, you're not always buying direct from the company when using the website. You may actually be purchasing from a third party.
So what impact does this have on customers? The first thing to say is that it gives us all access to an incredible range of choices. It also ensures that prices are competitive. Since different retailers may advertise the same products via the interface, there's a pressure for them to keep prices as low as possible. If they fail to do so, they'll find themselves being out-performed by rivals.
In a sense, we now see the Internet giant partly acting as a comparison site. It's quite a change of approach.
But there are dangers here too. Service levels have to remain high, otherwise damage will surely be done to the brand. We're told that featured advertisers have to work hard to ensure that their products are still listed - problems that have an impact on the customer experience won't be tolerated for long.
That sort of approach will need to continue. It will be vital to protecting the brand and ensuring that customers keep coming back.
Right now, we can see exactly why this is the online store of choice for many UK shoppers. If they can maintain existing high standards, then there's no reason why that should change.
